This Suwaidi Pearls is the only pearl farm in this region. For many of us, it’s Dubai that flashes before our eyes the moment we hear “United Arab Emirates.” Yes, Dubai is possibly the most global city-cum-emirate of the country, with its wide range of attractions – both natural & artificial. However, the other emirates of the UAE are no less attractive. It’s not only about the superlative constructions that Dubai – and Abu Dhabi – boast of. There is a pearl cultivation activity in the country that goes back several millennia. This activity used to be the mainstay of the economy of the area for a very long time. Several ports of the nation thrived by facilitating trading in pearls. And Ras Al Khaimah is one of them.
About the Farm & Activities
Start the tour from the Al Rams village where the farm is located – with the majestic Jebel Jais mountains in the background. The activity has undergone changes in technique over the years. Scientific innovations have ensured that the implements used are modern, more effective, and ensure much lesser risk for the cultivators.
And hey! You have a chance of hitting the jackpot as well! You can lay your hands on an oyster and open it – and if luck is with you, there will be a pearl inside that will be yours for the taking! In keeping with the times, the farm practices pearl farming techniques that are environment friendly. This is done to safeguard the fragile marine environment here.
Suwaidi Pearls Farm: Preserving Ras Al Khaimah’s Pearl Cultivation Heritage
Ras Al Khaimah has a long history that speaks volumes of the bustling pearl cultivation industry here. To preserve that history – and also to make the people of today aware of this fascinating activity – the Suwaidi Pearls Farm was established by Abdullah Al Suwaidi.
Pearl cultivation was a family occupation of the Suwaidis. Abdullah saw his grandfather actively involved in this activity. The men of the area would dive deep into the waters of the gulf to extract pearls which would adorn the rich and famous of those days, including the royal family.
The divers all belonged to the local community. They were well-trained in matters of safety and ensured zero tolerance in terms of negligence to protect themselves. A ban on the involvement of outsiders in the cultivation ensured the sanctity of the activity.
And pearl cultivation continues to this day – side-by-side with the glitz and glamour of the futuristic ambiance in Dubai & Abu Dhabi. Al Rams, where the farm is located, still sees local villagers engage in extracting pearls – while the women of the family ensure the perfect support system.
Suffice to say that pearl cultivation is an intrinsic part of Emirati culture & tradition. Endless exciting – and intriguing – stories are associated with this brave activity, throughout the ages. The farm exposes visitors to many such incredible happenings – and creates awareness about the deep bond that locals shared with the waters of the gulf, and why the beautiful emirate of Ras Al Khaimah is lovingly called “the pearl of the Emirates.”
Other activities that can be try nearby this location is Jebel Jais Sledder and Jebel Jais Zipline that offer an adventure experience.
