Earlier the Wasit Wetland was a disposal ground. In 2007, Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi (Supreme Council Member and the Ruler of Sharjah) announced it to be a ‘protected area’. Imagine a 20-acre disposal land transformed into a tourist zone that made Sharjah quite popular across the globe. Hence, The initiative turned out to be a successful measure since it became a safe zone for birds (local and migratory).

In 2010, wasteland transformation began and by 2015, the work was over. Dubai’s renowned design company X-Architects was behind the conceptualization of the project. Here you will find a transparent gallery with an observation structure. Finally, the Wasit Wasteland Reserve received Aga Khan Award in 2019 for its mind-blowing architecture.
