Walt Disney recently announced the news of a new theme park being set up in Abu Dhabi. This almost shook the entertainment and tourism industries. Although this move gave the Middle East a major push, it has also raised many debatable questions in the minds of people. One of them is how it will run in the extreme heat of Abu Dhabi. Read to know if it is going to be an indoor or outdoor attraction.
Walt Disney Drops the Idea of Abu Dhabi Theme Park
Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi (CEO of Miral Group) is the developer for all the other major attractions on Yas Island. In one of the recent interviews with the CEO of Miral Group, he mentioned that the upcoming Disney theme park will be similar to other theme parks on Yas Island. This approach is definitely not a surprise, especially due to the extreme heat in the city. Abu Dhabi experiences an average temperature of 110 degrees Fahrenheit during summer. This is definitely way hotter than other Disney parks.
The initial concept art released by Disney showed a mix of indoor and outdoor features. But the indoor elements are comparatively more, which is unlikely when it comes to Disney resorts. Furthermore, the perfect waterfront location will lead to creative architecture and water integration. So, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro called the upcoming project ‘highly ambitious.’
CEO Bob Iger added that the project will take five years to complete. However, Abu Dhabi has a rapid development pace and strong financial backing. This will accelerate the process.
Ethical Concerns Arise Over Human Rights and Inclusivity
Disneyland Abu Dhabi led to a series of scrutiny due to the contrast between Disney’s corporate messaging and UAE laws. Disney has been supporting inclusivity for years. It has been supporting LGBTQ+ rights and representation. The park supported Pride celebrations, and queer characters in the media, and made diversity a prime importance for the guests. Hence, many are doubting the partnership with Abu Dhabi.
Channeling Growth While Upholding Accountability
With Disney expanding into a new region, the Abu Dhabi project can probably serve as a case study for global branding challenges. But a question that remains unanswered is whether a theme park can work in a restrictive country while supporting equality. The construction is moving with confidence. But the cultural and political mystery of Disneyland Abu Dhabi still remains unresolved.
