Abu Dhabi took a big step in launching flying taxis. The successful testing happened at the Al Bateen Executive Airport on Wednesday.
This test was done by the US-based Archer Aviation in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). So, it has been confirmed to launch the flying taxi operations in the future. The commercial launch will take place next year.
Abu Dhabi Successfully Tests Flying Taxi Ahead of Commercial Launch
Omran Malek, head of autonomous mobility and robotics at Abu Dhabi Investment Office, said, “Today we took a step to turn the dream of air taxis into reality in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. The test was not just a simple step; it was the test to commercialize the entire idea. The launch of air taxi service is actually a step toward building an entire ecosystem. So, from pilot training and maintenance facilities to talent development and manufacturing in Al Ain, everything will come along.”
Furthermore, he added that ADIO is already working with various universities. The goal is to design curricula and specialized diplomas so that the future workforce can train and get ready for this sector.
The initial testing phase by Archer will continue up to summer to see how the aircraft adapts and performs in the UAE’s challenging weather. A few factors that have been taken into consideration are high temperature, humidity, and dust. Once it successfully clears, the test flights will move beyond Abu Dhabi city. By early 2026, the commercial service of the aircraft will begin.
Abu Dhabi’s successful launch of the test flight came a few days after a similar successful launch by Joby Aviation in Dubai. Both cities are planning to launch flying taxis within a short span of time.
Archer Aviation’s UAE manager, Dr Talib Alhinai, mentioned that Archer finished its first successful vertical takeoff and landing at the Al Bateen Executive Airport. He explained, “Our initial flight tests in the UAE were made to check the aircraft’s performance in the local environmental conditions. The vehicles that we brought are not yet a piloted version. But the piloted aircraft will come later this year.”
Alhinai also said, “Once we confirm readiness, we’ll expand our flight test programme and prepare for commercial deployment.”
Initially, Archer may introduce a small fleet of flying aircraft in the UAE. Besides, Omran Malek mentioned that the priority, as of now, is safe commercial operations supported by vertiports and integration with the airspace systems.
The manufacturing of the flying taxis will begin in 2027 at Al Ain. Besides, plans have been made to export aircraft to other potential regional markets.
Talking about the pricing, Malek said, “Many assume that this new mode of transportation is meant for luxury travelers, but it’s not the case in Abu Dhabi. Anyone can take the transportation due to the minimal cost. Besides, with the launch of more vertiports and aeroplanes in the future, the price will go down. As a result, it will become easy for daily use.”
